Dr. Carl Dettwiler was born and raised in the northern part of Oregon's Willamette Valley. Family vacations introduced him to the Oregon Coast, Wallowa Mountains and traveling through Lewiston to visit Grandma in Arlee, Montana. Memories of Lewiston include the Lewis-Clark murals on what was the old Safeway building.
Dr. Dettwiler graduated from Walla Walla College in1977 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. He completed medical school in 1981 at Loma Linda University in Southern California. He chose Kettering Medical Center/Wright State University in Dayton Ohio for his internal medicine residency. Following his residency, Dr. Dettwiler continued with his gastroenterology fellowship at Kettering Medical Center which he completed in 1986.
After completing medical school, residency, and fellowship, Dr. Dettwiler felt like he was coming home to the Northwest when he accepted a position to practice gastroenterology at Valley Medical Center in August of 1986. He was pleased to find the history murals still on the Safeway building.
